Antioquia is Colombia's most visitor-friendly department, and its three star destinations — Medellín, Guatapé, and Jardín — form a natural circuit that covers city, lake, and mountain in one trip. This 10-day itinerary gives each destination the time it deserves, with buffer days for weather delays, spontaneous discoveries, and the Colombian art of doing nothing.
The Overview
| Days | Location | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| 1–4 | Medellín | City, culture, nightlife, Comuna 13 |
| 5–7 | Guatapé | Lake, La Piedra, adventure, waterfalls |
| 8–10 | Jardín | Coffee, birdwatching, mountain pueblo |
Days 1–4: Medellín
Day 1: Arrive at José María Córdova airport (MDE). Transfer to El Poblado or Laureles (your base). Settle in, walk the neighborhood, dinner at a local restaurant. Adjust to the altitude (1,495m) — take it easy.
Day 2: Comuna 13 graffiti tour in the morning (book a guided walking tour — the history and art deserve context). Afternoon: ride the Metro and Metrocable to Parque Arví for forest air and panoramic views. Evening: explore Laureles' Calle 70 bar scene or Provenza in El Poblado.
Day 3: Free day for your interests — Museo de Antioquia and Plaza Botero, Jardín Botánico, paragliding from San Félix, or shopping at the Mercado del Río food hall. This is your buffer day for anything you want to explore at your own pace.
Day 4: Morning: pick up anything you missed in Medellín. Afternoon: pack for Guatapé and arrange transport for tomorrow. If going independently, check bus schedules from Terminal del Norte. If on a tour, confirm pickup time.
Days 5–7: Guatapé
Day 5: Travel to Guatapé (2 hours). Check into your finca or hotel. Afternoon: walk the town and zócalo streets at a relaxed pace. Evening: dinner on the malecón, sunset over the reservoir from the waterfront.
Day 6: The main event. La Piedra at 8:00 AM (opening time, minimal crowds). Down by 9:30. Private lancha boat tour from 10:30 (2 hours). Lunch in town. Afternoon: choose one — jet ski, kayak, ATV ride, or hammock at your finca. This is the day most visitors cram into a single day trip. With 3 days, you can breathe.
Day 7: Day trip to San Rafael for waterfalls and river swimming, or a canyoning adventure, or a coffee/cacao farm tour. Return by mid-afternoon. Pack for tomorrow's transfer to Jardín. Final sunset from your finca terrace.
Days 8–10: Jardín
Day 8: Transfer to Jardín. The direct route goes back through Medellín (Guatapé → Medellín → Jardín), which takes 5–6 hours total with a transfer. Alternatively, a private driver can take the scenic mountain route. Arrive in Jardín by afternoon. Walk the main plaza — arguably the most beautiful town square in Colombia. Dinner at a traditional restaurant.
Day 9: Morning: coffee farm tour. Jardín is in the heart of Colombia's coffee country and the farm experiences here are more intimate and authentic than the larger Coffee Triangle operations. Afternoon: hike to the Cueva del Esplendor (Cave of Splendor) — a waterfall inside a cave, one of Antioquia's most dramatic natural sights. Evening: trout dinner and tinto (coffee) on the plaza.
Day 10: Morning: birdwatching at a local reserve (Jardín is famous for Andean cock-of-the-rock sightings). Late morning: cable car (Garrucha) across the valley for panoramic views. Afternoon: transfer back to Medellín for your departure flight, or add more days if your schedule allows.
